Animal Crossing New Horizons
By Amelia on December 30th 2023

One of the simpler fishing mini-games out there, it fits right in with Animal Crossing’s laid back atmosphere. Cast your line in front of a fish's shadow or hope it wanders near enough to your bobber, wait for the right amount of nibbles and press the button to strike.

Whilst this does sound very relaxing the pang of fish getting away or the thrill of landing something new are one of the few sparks of excitement to be found in New Horizons. Slowly filling up the museum brings a sense of satisfaction and the rare visit from C.J. (an npc that will give you quests such as catching a certain fish or catching several in a streak) helps to spice things up, as well as help you get rare furniture and clothes.

On the other hand we have the worst feature in New Horizons as a whole. Tool durability. Grinding for the silver and golden tools in New Leaf could be a pain but I would take that any day instead of constantly having to fret over whether my rod is about to break and require me to put in the pointless busy work that is crafting tools.

Overall the fishing is one of the few real spikes of emotion in a chilled out game, with the thrill of landing a rare catch or the frustration as it gets away it manages to still keep it simple enough to fit right in. Just make sure you bring a few rods if you don’t wanna stop your fishing trip half-way through to go make more.
